How to Make a Rivet Coin Purse
If you love quick, satisfying makes with lots of creative flexibility, this Rivet Coin Purse design is going to be right up your alley.
In this tutorial, I’m walking you through how to make a no-sew faux leather purse that can be styled as a coin purse, clutch, wristlet, or even a mini handbag. Everything is assembled using rivets and snaps only, no stitching at all, which makes this design perfect for beginners and experienced makers alike.
This pattern came directly from feedback in our community. You asked for options, and I’ve packed them in.
A Truly Versatile No-Sew Purse Design
The Rivet Coin Purse pattern is built around one clever base shape, but the finished look can change completely depending on the options you choose.
You can make:
A simple coin purse or card holder
A clutch-style pouch
A mini handbag
A wristlet or keyring purse
A fast, repeatable craft stall product
It’s a great example of how one template can do a lot of work for you.
Sizes Included (And Resizing Tips)
The pattern includes two ready-to-use sizes:
A small size, perfect for credit cards, coins, and small essentials
A larger size, designed so the stitch holes remain neat even when scaled up
You can resize the templates, but because enlarging a file also enlarges the holes, I recommend cutting the design in paper or cardstock first if you plan to go bigger. That way you can test the proportions before committing to faux leather.

Flap Styles and Closure Options
One of the most fun parts of this design is choosing the flap.
You’ll receive four different flap styles, including:
A satchel-style flap with double snaps
A classic curved flap
A decorative flap that’s been popular in my smaller purse designs
A simple envelope-style flap, which is made from a single piece
The envelope flap works best with non-directional prints or simple patterns like spots or stripes, as the whole purse is cut from one continuous piece.
Lining Ideas: Adding Interest Inside
You can absolutely use plain faux leather on its own, but for this make I added a lining using patterned HTV on the inside.
It applies just like regular HTV, comes with clear heat instructions, and holds up really well. It’s a lovely way to add a pop of colour or pattern inside your purse without adding bulk or sewing.
Of course, patterned faux leather works beautifully too. Both options give great results.

Tabs, Straps, and Hardware Choices
This design gives you full control over how the purse is carried.
You can choose:
Single-sided tabs for wristlets
Double-sided tabs for D-rings, chains, or straps
A fob option
A handle or strap option with rivet holes already placed
You don’t have to use a D-ring at all. A split ring works just as well, or you can attach hardware directly to the purse. The rivets lock everything in place securely.
Rivets: The Hero of This Design
Rivets do all the work here. They:
Form the gusset
Hold the sides together
Secure tabs, straps, and hardware
Give the purse its structure and shape
I’ve been using 8 mm rivets, which fit snugly through the holes and give a bold, modern look. Smaller rivets will also work if you prefer a more subtle finish.
If you have a press, use it. If not, a hammer works perfectly fine too. Just follow your hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
Assembly Overview
The general assembly order is:
Apply snaps first
Attach tabs or D-rings
Use rivets to create the gusset and side structure
Secure all rivets once everything is aligned
Assemble and attach the fob, handle, or strap
The whole purse comes together very quickly, especially once you’ve made one and know your preferred size and style.
A Design Built from Community Feedback
This purse design was inspired by requests following earlier Maisie Moo projects, including the dog treat bag, which uses a similar gusset technique. I loved hearing what you wanted, and I’ve done my best to include plenty of options so you can truly make it your own.
I can’t wait to see how you style yours, whether it’s minimal, bold, playful, or market-ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this design really no-sew?
Yes. The entire purse is assembled using rivets and snaps only. No stitching required.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. If you’re comfortable using basic hand tools and following a template, this is a great beginner project.
Can I resize the pattern?
Yes, but I recommend testing resized versions in paper or cardstock first, as resizing also affects hole size.
What type of faux leather works best?
Most faux leathers work well, especially medium-weight options. Canvas-backed faux leather gives excellent structure, but softer faux leather works too depending on the look you want.
Can I use a different closure instead of snaps?
Yes. While the pattern is designed for snaps, you can adapt it for other closures if you’re comfortable modifying hardware placement.
What rivet size should I use?
I’ve been using 8 mm rivets, but smaller or larger rivets will work as long as they fit your material thickness.
Can this be sold at markets?
Yes. This design is ideal for craft stalls, gifting, and batch making. Just remember to follow the Maisie Moo license terms for selling finished items.
